Dementia is one of the most common mental diseases that impact the elderly. It is not a specific condition — instead dementia is a more generalized term that refers to a significant decline in cognitive and mental abilities. Unfortunately, dementia is common. According to data published by the World Health Organization (WHO), there are 50 million people living with dementia globally.
For an elderly person and their family members, dealing with the effects of dementia is challenging. The sooner you take action to support your loved one, the better. When it comes to dementia, early intervention is the key to preserving the highest possible quality of life and there are a number of health care options available to help fight this disease — qualified applicants may even be eligible to use EEOICPA and RECA benefits to access free home health care services.
What Are the Early Warning Signs of Dementia?
In most patients dementia develops gradually and so, the disease can be difficult to recognize. Although, there are a number of early warning signs and symptoms that collectively indicate a problem.
One specific sign to watch out for is cognitive change. Cognitive changes include short-term memory loss, difficulty finding words, difficulty with problem-solving, struggling with planning, and general confusion or disorientation.
Physical Changes are another key indicator. Physical symptoms may include poor coordination, changes in personality, depression, anxiety, unusual mood swings, and paranoia.
Whilst it is important to remain aware of dementia symptoms if your elderly loved one forgets something it does not mean that you should panic. Forgetfulness is common among seniors and it is certainly not always the sign of a problem. Still, it is important to stay vigilant. If warning signs continue to show up, then it is time to take action and make sure that your loved one gets a professional medical evaluation.
Dementia is Notoriously Difficult to Diagnose
It is important to understand that dementia is not a single disease and rather it is a set of conditions. For this reason, dementia is often difficult to diagnose. However, you do need to know exactly what form of dementia is occurring in your loved one.
In many cases, dementia is irreversible. For example, with Alzheimer’s disease — which is the most common form of dementia — there is no cure. However, even with non-curable forms of dementia, there are still many treatment options available that can help to slow the onset of the condition and preserve a fulfilling, healthy lifestyle.
On the other hand, some forms of dementia are curable. Dementia linked to a traumatic brain injury (TBI) is often treatable. Other cases of curable dementia include dementia that is caused by an infection or an autoimmune disorder. Regardless, it is important to have your elderly loved one’s specific condition assessed.
The bottom line is that dementia can only be treated properly if the condition is diagnosed correctly.
Early Intervention is Critically Important
In the case of dementia, the importance of early intervention cannot be overstated. The longer dementia is left to develop unchecked, the worse it can make things for the person experiencing the disease and their family members. Even when dealing with irreversible forms of dementia, the cognitive decline does not occur in a predictable straight line — far from it. There are also drug-based and non-drug medical interventions that can be used to treat the patient and slow down dementia onset.
The sooner dementia is treated, the more likely that the person suffering will be able to effectively deal with the condition.
